Review of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch – one of Netflix recent originals is a dark comedy offers nostalgia and transforms this series into a modern mix of American Horror Story and Stranger Things. Bringing in young lead characters, it appeals to a younger crowd yet still can entertain those adults who once loved watching the series starring Melissa Joan Hart or the colorful funny animated series – both which aired back in the late 90s.
Kiernan Shipka who portrays Sabrina Spellman does an amazing job bringing this character back to life. Lucy Davis brings the corky-ness that Aunt Hilda is known for. Miranda Otto brings the right amount of discipline and motherly figure that ‘Sabrina’ usually gets from her Aunt Zelda. While this series, introduces many powerful supporting actors, by far it includes a wide range of strong women characters: which include but are not limited to, characters such as Madam Satan, the three witch orphan sisters/colleagues of Sabrina, and her mortal best friends Rosalind Walker and Susie Putnam.
Although, the series is rated TV-14 – this is definitely one that should be monitored by a parent or guardian. Aside from shining to light to Satanism, this series also includes quite a bit of sexual content and does present disturbing scenes full of intense amount of violence and brutality that should be addressed or conversed with minors. The show does include situations of how the powerful young women in the series deal with bullying, social justice and empowerment issues which is great but is often masked with some of the gruesome details that lead up to the overall positive message.
*********** SPOILER ALERT ********** Throughout Season 1, we watch Sabrina battle on whether or not she wants to give up her mortality to the under world to become a witch. And in the end, in exchange to strengthen her powers, she does end up choosing to submit herself to Satan and become a witch. Excited to see what will come of Season 2!
Overall for this Review of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I will have to rate this Netflix original 5 stars ***** with parental advisory for teens under 18.
